Farmers in the north east are jubilant amid one of the best berry seasons in recent memory. After spring rainfall and hot summer days, growing conditions for soft fruit have been described as “perfect”.
Meanwhile, sales have soared amid Wimbledon fever and recent soaring temperatures. During the tennis tournament, strawberry sales surged by 40%, with 8000 tonnes being consumed across the country. One Arbroath farm is working at full capacity to prepare punnets of strawberries, raspberries and blackberries for major retailers.
Allen Innes, manager at East Seaton Farm, said they were producing up to 40 tonnes of fruit a day for supermarkets across Scotland….
